NEW YORK - Jun 17, 2015
Infor, the industry cloud company, today announced that Swedish snack manufacturer Estrella has extended its investment in Infor M3. The enterprise resource planning (ERP) application has been successfully upgraded with no disruption to the business, using an innovative gamification project that accelerated deployment across Estrella's operations in seven countries across the Nordics and Baltics.
Following Estrella's acquisition by Intersnack, Estrella upgraded to the latest version of Infor M3 in order to ensure continued growth across its established Nordic market, and facilitate expansion into the emerging Baltic markets. Another key factor was to take advantage of new pallet label identification capabilities to support traceability and logistics processes. As a manufacturer in the highly competitive and fast-paced snack food market, it was vital that the upgrade caused no disruption to the business.
A key part of this involved fully testing the application amongst Estrella's users to ensure it could deliver all the functionality required. To maximize the success of the testing process, a 'game' was introduced into Infor M3 with points awarded for the testers for the consistency of their log-ins and the completion of specific tasks. Progressing levels throughout the game encouraged progress and high score lists were posted on the Estrella intranet to foster competition across departments and countries. Although injecting some fun across the organization was crucial, the game also gave control over the testing processes to the CIO and management team who were able to see what had been tested and to what degree.
"The gamification project has resulted in a very smooth upgrade with no business disruption, but in the process, it has become far more than just an implementation tool," said Anders Ivarsson, CIO, Estrella. "ERP upgrades are typically big projects that can present a risk to a business if they go wrong. However we have just successfully jumped two versions of Infor M3, whilst moving from an iSeries to a Windows platform, with no impact to the business. This goes a long way to seeking buy-in and reassuring senior management in preparation for our next upgrade. Elsewhere, the positive uptake of the game within the application gives us confidence that we can use similar methodologies to identify different uses and best practices across the group. This will help us identify business processes on which we can standardize throughout the business.
"It is truly exciting to see the benefits of new ideas such as gamification within enterprise applications," said Malte Ekedahl, sales director for Sweden, Infor. "This is not just about novelty or fun, but methodologies that can yield impressive results. Improving the ease and speed of an ERP upgrade is something that many CIOs would welcome and Estrella has shown that creative thinking can be a key tool in doing just that."
