White paper - A Silver Lining for Communications, Media, and Entertainment Companies

Abstract

The current recession affects virtually every sector of the American economy, but businesses in the communications, media, and entertainment (CME) industries experience some of the greatest impact because of their deep dependence on the consumer’s ever-shrinking pool of disposable income. According to the NPD Group, total restaurant traffic declined 2.6% for this year’s spring quarter compared to the same quarter last year—the sharpest decline since 1981.1 Another report states that 37% of Americans are cutting spending on entertainment due to economic concerns.2 Faced with constrained discretionary spending, millions of consumers are scaling back on everything from cell phone plans to family vacations while showing new interest in dining and entertaining at home.
