Allen Ray (Allen Ray Associates) and Neil Gillespie (Shamrock Growth Associates) surveyed Independent Distribution in a number of vertical channels to discover how distributors fared during the recession, what steps they took to cope with it, and determine what better performers did as compared to others. They also sought to discover how distributors thought they could grow in the future, which growth strategies they would choose, and the level of difficulty in implementing different growth strategies such as retention, taking share from competitors, and targeting high-growth segments and adjacent businesses initiatives. Finally, the survey endeavored to discover how strong the distributors viewed certain risks to the business, such as the direction of the nation, prospects for inflation, the health of the future economy and the impact on their long-term future.
Survey invitations— 2,416— were sent to owners, presidents, and C-level personnel to learn how they've dealt with the current economic conditions and what they see for the future.
