Reflections on HIMSS 2019
HIMSS felt different this year. Sure, it was another week in Orlando with 1,300 exhibitors pitching to some 43,000 attendees, but it was different.
Interoperability was clearly the leading theme at HIMSS again this year, pushed to the fore in part by the release of two Federal NPRMs on Interoperability and Data Blocking. But beyond the buzzwords, it felt like an inflection point.
The proposed rules helped to punctuate the industry’s rapid shift to open APIs, and FHIR in particular, as the key to consumerization and digital transformation of the industry. So did the active presence of tech giants like Microsoft, leveraging FHIR to build care team collaboration solutions with Microsoft Teams.
Two other related themes were cloud, with the ongoing push to shift infrastructure, services, and data to the cloud, made notable by the active presence of AWS, Google, Microsoft and many others on the floor, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) through gaining useful insight from data in everyone’s workflow.
These of course are all interrelated and dependent. The movement of tech giants into healthcare, the shift to the cloud and leveraging mega scale data and AI technologies in the cloud, accelerating consumerization and digital streamlining of healthcare all depend on interoperability fueled by open, standard APIs—in short, FHIR.
I am happy that we were able to have many good conversations at HIMSS about our support for FHIR in Cloverleaf 19.1 and FHIR Bridge, for API management with the Cloverleaf API Gateway, and about our strategy for the cloud with an upcoming release this spring of Cloverleaf in the Infor AWS Cloud. My colleagues representing Infor CloudSuite Healthcare were also there to talk about our cloud offerings, including Infor OS and Coleman AI.
This year HIMSS signaled a turning point, and we should expect to see the pace of innovation pick up dramatically over the coming months and years, powered by interoperability. We are thrilled to contribute to this industry transformation.
