UNC Health Care gives providers more face time with patients using Infor FHIR Bridge

March 8, 2018

Can you think of a time when you went to a doctor’s appointment and the physician spent half of the visit facing a computer screen looking for information or keying in data while you sat there? I’m guessing everyone can relate to a few experiences like this that frustrate not only the patient, but also the provider. In a recent webinar, I discussed how a new product called Infor FHIR Bridge can help alleviate this challenge and give physicians more face time with patients.

Healthcare today is about connected health. Clinical integration technology, such as Infor Cloverleaf, plays an important role in helping organizations achieve a connected health network. Many organizations are swimming in oceans of data—so much so that time is wasted trying to find the right data. Standards such as the HL7® Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) make it easier for providers to innovate and for patients to access the data they need when they need it. Compared to other standards, such as HL7v2 and CDA, FHIR is cloud ready and allows for on-demand access.

We’re excited to add Infor FHIR Bridge to the Cloverleaf family of products. Infor FHIR Bridge speeds up the integration of data that leads to more benefits such as:

  • Improved care coordination that helps caregivers retrieve the right information on demand
  • FHIR enabled legacy systems that facilitate data access via FHIR
  • Accelerated digital innovation that engages providers and patients

This new product adds value to interoperability by extending care and engagement capabilities of existing systems to web and mobile applications, opening up access to more data sources more than ever before through the use of APIs.

UNC Health Care helps bridge the relationship between physicians and patients

Mike Plesh, Director of IT Integration Services at UNC Health Care, explained that before Infor FHIR Bridge his organization was trying to solve a problem where ambulatory physicians needed to aggregate and view data, by date, from multiple sources to see the bigger picture of a patient’s health. This can be cumbersome and time consuming, especially when managing chronic health problems where a patient’s status and needs change regularly. An additional challenge was that the APIs provided by the EHR vendor did not support access to all UNC’s data needs in the way they needed.

UNC partnered with Infor to accelerate innovation in order to give providers key clinical and patient questionnaire information they need, in a single view, with a goal of giving back more face time between providers and patients while enabling better care. This resulted in less time spent compiling patient information, and improved patient and physician satisfaction. Infor FHIR Bridge also provides benefits to innovative UNC app developers through simplified connection configurations, valuable developer tools, and targeted data stewardship that only provides the data needed.
