Charles Phillips, Cam Newton Honored by Big Brothers Big Sisters

United States – April 19, 2016, 12:00 PM

Infor CEO Charles Phillips, NFL MVP Cam Newton, and Ad Council CEO Lisa Sherman are being honored by Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City for their ongoing support of youth mentoring.

At the 37th annual "Sidewalks of New York" Awards Dinner at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan on Monday evening, the three were recognized for "tremendous leadership in their professional and personal lives, and who have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to making a difference in the lives of young people through philanthropic contributions and community service."

Newton, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers and 2015 NFL MVP, received the Sports Award. Sherman, president and chief executive officer of the Ad Council, received the Public Service Award. And Big Brother Bill Coleman and Little Brother Rey Familia Veras presented Phillips with the Corporate Award.

"I know, from my own experience, what a tremendous impact a mentor can have," Phillips told the gathering. As a youth, he said, he used to hang around an electronics store in the neighborhood. The store owner noticed him and his interest in computers, and took him on to mentor. Phillips started building computers at home, then majored in computer science at the Air Force Academy, and went on to a career of leadership and innovation in the Marines, Wall Street, Oracle and Infor.

"I thank all of you mentors," Phillips said. "Big Brothers Big Sisters changes lives, and changed lives can change the world."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City is the nation's first and New York's largest youth mentoring organization. The April 18 gala raised money to support the organization's mission of providing at-risk youth across New York City with positive adult role models.

"Sidewalks of New York is a celebration of mentoring and the profound impact it has over time on the more than 5,000 young people we serve each year," said Hector Batista, chief executive officer of BBBS of NYC. "While the positive effects of mentoring begin to reveal themselves almost immediately, so many of our Bigs continue to mentor their Littles for years beyond their initial commitment, and this is where we see the greatest results. The money raised this evening allows us to serve more young people, and help the matches last for the long term to grow that impact over time."

BBBS of NYC is just one of a variety of organizations Phillips supports and promotes through the Phillips Charitable Foundation and the philanthropy of Infor. Others include:
