Habitat Brooklyn Build - From Greenhorns to Pros in 1 Day

United States – March 21, 2017, 08:00 AM

The day began in the laundry room. Armed with hard hats, safety goggles, and gloves, 19 employees from Infor HQ in New York huddled for a briefing from the AmeriCorps crew before beginning their work on the Habitat for Humanity build in Brooklyn. Their mission: work as a cohesive unit and master new construction skills to make a serious dent in the Dean Street Project in one day.

The Dean Street Project comprises 15 two-bedroom apartments. The briefing included a story about a family whose lives were changed thanks to the home they received. Inspired, the Infor Team split into groups, grabbed their gear, and headed for the first task of the day: distributing soundproofing insulation to the apartments.

A productivity pipeline commenced, with the team creating a human supply chain to bring up the bags of insulation to the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors, said Reed Kochanek, Infor business development representative.

Next, the teams stuffed the material between the ceiling joists of each room. The material, made from volcanic rock, provides a layer of insulation in addition to soundproofing, which, as any New Yorker will tell you, is very welcome.

Some team members also cut steel and wood to build door frames for doorways and closets. Sparks flew (with safety goggles firmly secured!) and wood pieces were cut, and all in all, more than 10 door frames were fashioned.

"We got to learn how to use equipment that I had never used before. There were different types of saws and drills that seemed intimidating, but we were taught how to use them safely," said Max Brewer, Infor business development representative. "By the end of the day, we all felt like professionals."

"When this building is finished and families move in and call it home, we'll also get a special feeling knowing we had a hand in making these families' dreams come true," Kochanek said. "Also, it was great to connect with Infor employees that I've never spoken to before and to build relationships. Everyone had lunch in a circle together, and then finally, we all helped clean up together. The Habitat for Humanity team made the day fun and full of laughs."

"What an awesome day!" said Isabella Moylan, Corporate Communications associate. "This was my first experience volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, and I can't shake the sense of pride I have in contributing to the Dean Street complex while communing with colleagues."
