"In the ERP world, I often say that clinical applications are the yin and operations are the yang. Seemingly contrary forces that are, in fact, complementary. I use this combination of direct care management experience with my understanding of the benefits technology brings to healthcare to help my clients, and fellow nurses, anticipate future needs."
My clinical career did not take the same path as most. However, I have now been a nurse for forty years and am very glad I am.
I became a nurse in the United Kingdom when I was 19 years old. I had recently been laid off from another job while I was also attending school and studying organic chemistry. So I had to change plans, quickly. At the local job center an advisor suggested nursing as a career path with a lot of opportunity. I was essentially a student and a nurse until I graduated and entered clinical practice. I also went on to work at the Royal College of Nursing, the professional association in the UK.
Around 27 years old, I had the choice to further my career by either becoming a nurse educator or pursuing a higher degree on a path toward leadership. I chose the latter, then landed as a Hospital Manager of a specialty ophthalmic hospital within a hospital group.
I had always been interested in technology as applied to nursing and management and even bought my own IBM desktop and dot-matrix printer. As part of my management responsibilities I became involved in the selection of a new IT system for the hospital group learning how technology can capture and manipulate data. About 6 months after we selected the successful vendor a job opportunity opened with them to lead their pre-sales team.
This stage of my career led me away from healthcare for a couple of years, working in financial services ERP. It was a great experience and I had a lot of fun, but it never really resonated with me the way that the healthcare industry did. After three years leading a business back in the healthcare space, the opportunity came for my family and I to emigrate to the US to work for one of the rapidly growing clinical EMR companies. I spent 16 years working for that company before the opportunity to come to Infor just over a year ago.
Today, I lead the teams that facilitate and support how healthcare clients use our products and functionality, specifically in two important areas. The first is human resources. Staffing makes up sixty percent of hospital costs. Efficient staffing is key to financial survival for providers and key to supporting nurses in their work. No one wants a frustrated nurse. The second core area of my focus is supply management. All caregivers know that if we don’t have the right items, at the right time, patient care suffers. The recent shortage- of PPE in care settings across the country (and the globe) is testament to that.
In the ERP world, I often say that clinical applications are the yin and operations are the yang. Seemingly contrary forces that are, in fact, complementary. I use this combination of direct care management experience with my understanding of the benefits technology brings to healthcare to help my clients, and fellow nurses, anticipate future needs.
