Instructor Spotlight: Jessica Melger

What brought you to Infor?

A little over six years ago, I was paddle board racing (one of my long-time hobbies) in North Carolina, when I met a woman. We were making small talk in the breakfast line and quickly learned that we knew some of the same people. We spoke more after the race and she informed me of others around the country she'd participated in. She also told me about her job at Infor and her role with Lawson Tech as an instructor. I remember thinking, I need to give her my resume, that sounds fantastic!

I was working for an HR software company at the time, and it was a great place, but I wanted something more challenging. Based on everything she told me, Infor sounded exactly like what I was looking for. Given my educational experience and background in IT support, it seemed like a perfect fit. So, I took the chance and sent her my resume.

We met up the very next weekend at another race in Key West. I was excited to see my new friend and find out more about a potential new career. She had great news, and the director wanted to meet me the following week. The next Tuesday, I had a wonderful phone interview with the Director of Education, and by Thursday, I had the job offer I'd been hoping for.

And to this day, I still work closely with the instructor I met at that race!

How long have you been teaching?

It's funny, I had never actually been an instructor before this role. However, I had worked as a paint-and-sip teacher and was able to apply what I learned during those classes to this role.

What's your favorite aspect of your current role?

For me, it's the in-person interaction. When I'm teaching on-site, I love being face-to-face with our employees and customers, showing them our products, as well as getting to know them on a more personal level, and making each training delivery as fun and rewarding as possible. It's much easier to do this in-person. It also gives me the ability to create more value in our training.

Where are you located?

Orlando is my home. I live here with my boyfriend and our two fur babies: Winston, our 13-year-old Yorkshire Terrier and Beans, our 9-week-old Dachshund. I've lived on the West Coast as well, but Florida has always been home for me. My family is originally from the United Kingdom; I was born there. My father was Indonesian, and my mother is British. We migrated to the United States when I was two years old and lived in South Florida for about 12 years. We also lived in Oregon and Northern California. After serving in the Navy, I returned to Florida in 2005. I was stationed in Washington State, and could probably write a novel about all of the places and things I've seen.

What are your hobbies?

I have so many! I mentioned earlier that I paddle board and paint, and have been a paid artist for Werner Paddles for several years. My artwork can be seen on some of their products. At the moment, my biggest passion is cars. I've been building a show car for the past three years, and have many trophies from the various car shows its been in. I do a lot of the work myself, and often go down a YouTube rabbit hole trying to figure things out. I suppose that comes from my IT troubleshooting mindset.

What products do you specialize in?

Infor OS has been my central focus since my first days with Infor. I love the product and because I know what it takes to support applications, I love sharing that knowledge as it relates to Infor OS when I teach.

I also teach Enterprise Performance Management (EPM, formerly known as d/EPM), one of our BI products that focuses on financial reporting. Most people will be familiar with FSM, and its reporting is actually built on the EPM platform.
